Musical by Jerry Herman (1983)
Georges and Albin have been in a personal and professional relationship for twenty years: As the seductive Zaza, Albin is the star of George's nightclub La Cage aux Folles in St. Tropez. Behind the scenes, however, he drives his colleagues as well as his boss and life partner crazy with his diva airs. The extravagant life is soon turned upside down when Jean-Michel - Georges' son from a previous relationship - arrives with his fiancée Anne. He wants his father's blessing and the in-laws want to meet his family. Now, however, Anne's father is an arch-conservative politician who is unlikely to like Georges' lifestyle. This smells of trouble, but in the end Albin saves the evening as a picture-perfect mother.
Already Jean Poiret's play became a huge boulevard success in 1973. Ten years later, Jerry Herman, author of Hello, Dolly! turned it into a Broadway hit. With songs like "I am what I am," the fast-paced, dance-filled farce becomes a hymn to a life free of constricting conventions.
