On September 6, 1969, the Rüsselsheim Theatre was ceremoniously opened with Giuseppe Verdi's "La Traviata". Fifty years later, the Venezia Festival Opera presents the work again in a production with a large orchestra and outstanding international soloists. "La Traviata" is one of the highlights of Italian opera literature and one of the most performed stage works from the 19th century. Francesco Maria Piave wrote the libretto based on the novel "The Lady of the Camellias" by Alexandre Dumas the Younger. "La Traviata" tells of Violetta's tragic love for Alfredo - without a future and at the mercy of fate. Experience a moving evening of opera with Welsh soprano Lauren Francis in the role of Violetta. She made her German debut in 2008 as the Queen of the Night in Mozart's opera "The Magic Flute" at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf and the Stadttheater in Freiburg. Guest contracts later took her to the Nationaltheater Mannheim and the Hessisches Staatstheater Darmstadt. The soprano is in demand throughout Europe, especially for Mozart, Puccini and Verdi roles. Theater Rüsselsheim was able to engage the Romanian tenor Alexandru Badea as a guest star for the role of Alfredo. Badea has been a guest at the Italian Night at the Rüsselsheim Theatre several times and is now considered a favourite of the Rüsselsheim audience. Riccardo Lombardi takes on the role of Giorgio Germont. The 120-member orchestra of the Venezia Festival Opera performs under the direction of Stellario Fagone (choral director of the Bavarian State Opera). Director Nadia Hristo's subtle staging succeeds in walking the tightrope between tragedy and joie de vivre.
