In flamenco, women usually play the role of dancers, but they rarely set the tone. Yet flamenco can be so feminine. Las Migas are the proof.
With Marta Robles, Isabelle Laudenbach, Lisa Bause and Sílvia Pérez Cruz, the quartet is composed exclusively of women. But that alone is not what makes their flamenco sound so fresh and avant-garde.
Las Migas draw inspiration from traditional flamenco, but go beyond its language. The Barcelona-based musicians bring two guitars, a violin, a cajón, exceptional voices and their collective experiences to the music. Marta and Isabelle come from flamenco and classical guitar, Lisa from tango, circus and vaudeville music, Silvia from fado, jazz and habaneras. These different backgrounds, which they let shine through in a subliminal way, make Las Migas so fascinating and a welcome guest on Spain's most prestigious stages as well as at festivals all over Europe.
Is Las Migas a flamenco group? In any case, they make more use of that genre than any other. Their songs, however, are an unusual fusion of a wide variety of styles that are in harmony with each other in an extraordinary way. Popular music with classical roots, Latin American and Mediterranean sounds, come to a melodious zenith. "In Las Migas' music, flamenco blends with Latin American elements, pop and folk sounds and a jazzy touch in an inimitable way to create a melodious whole."
We are the crumbs (Las Migas) from the bread that is flamenco. Migas is also the name of a dish common throughout Spain, originally a poor man's meal, which is quite hearty depending on the region. (Las Migas) Their Mediterranean musical recipe definitely whets the appetite for more! Their debut album Reinas del Matute (2010) already generated a lot of buzz, and the new album Nosotras Somos is no less praised. We are sounds justifiably self-confident and contains with the Spanish Nosotras a not to be translated into German becausebliche Wir note.
