For this 12th edition of the lifelines, the Rüsselsheim visual artist Inge Besgen again conducted and recorded interviews with four citizens of our city. On the basis of these recordings, the psychoanalyst Dr. Norbert Mink then wrote short character studies, and these in turn have become the basis for four compositions by the composer of this year's "Lebenslinien", Karola Obermüller. Her new portrait compositions, which she has written for cello, bass clarinet and horn, will be premiered this year by the ensemble "Soli fan tutti" from Darmstadt and presented to the Rüsselsheimers thus portrayed. Stephan A. Dudek will lead through the program.
Karola Obermüller's individual compositional voice began to take shape when she recorded sound collages on tape as a child. Later she completed studies in composition in Darmstadt, Nuremberg, Saarbrücken and at the Mozarteum Salzburg. Her understanding of rhythm and form was fundamentally changed by a stay in Chennai and Delhi (India), where she studied Carnatic and Hindustani music. A doctorate at Harvard University took her to the USA, where she now holds a professorship at the University of New Mexico. She lives part of the year in Darmstadt and has been a guest artist at the ZKM in Karlsruhe, the German Academy in Rome, the Centro Tedesco di Studi Veneziani, the Akademie Schloss Solitude near Stuttgart, and IRCAM in Paris.
In the ensemble Soli fan tutti, members of the Darmstadt State Orchestra perform. The instrumentation is as variable as the repertoire, which ranges from baroque music to contemporary music. Alongside favourite pieces of the musicians and the audience, rarities, unjustly misunderstood masterpieces and world premieres are heard.
Michael Veit has been the initiator and busy organizer of this excellent ensemble since its founding in 1992. He trained as a cellist with renowned teachers in Munich, Detmold, Siena and Düsseldorf and has been first solo cellist in the Darmstadt State Orchestra since 1986. His special commitment to contemporary music has also led to the 2006 release of a CD with live recordings of six world premieres and Luciano Berio's "Sequenza".
Bass clarinettist David Wolf studied in Munich and has had regular engagements with the Munich Philharmonic, the Frankfurt Museum Orchestra and, in addition, the Stuttgart Opera. Since 2001 he has been bass clarinettist in the Darmstadt State Orchestra, but also appears with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and the BR Symphony Orchestra. He is a member of the Frankfurt Clarinet Trio, whose programs include early music and contemporary music.
Hornist Juliane Baucke studied in Essen and Stuttgart. She has been engaged with the Staatsorchester Darmstadt since 2001, until 2010 as principal horn, since then as deputy principal horn. Her special interest in New Music led to many guest engagements with renowned ensembles such as Ensemble Modern, E-MEX-Ensemble, Ensemble Musikfabrik, but especially with ensemble aisthesis in Heidelberg and the Freiburg-based ensemble recherche.
