The world is quite a crazy place - you don't have to be old and wise to come to that realization. Young and wise is sometimes enough: 18, like Lina Maly. The singer and musician from near Hamburg reflects on herself, life and the things that surround her in her songs - and she does it with a depth, sincerity and beauty that it takes your breath away.
Lina Maly sings sometimes softly and melancholic, then again pointedly and emphatically, sometimes sweetly whispered, at other times almost more spoken than sung, in short: she creates her very own, fascinating sound world. The same goes for her lyrics, which come from the gut and from the heart - and which pick you up no matter where you are in this crazy world. "Are we never beautiful enough? Is it never beautiful enough here? Are we never beautiful enough the way we are?" Lina Maly asks herself in "Beautiful Enough", she states in "Just Visiting": "We have stolen a piece of time. She catches us up again anyway", and she wishes in "Growing": "All grow, but which of them flourishes? [...] all grow, but I want to thrive."
How can you write lyrics like that at 18 and yet not sound a bit precocious? Simple: you're authentic. The lines to "Beautiful Enough", for example, are inspired by Lina's experiences in her own circle of acquaintances. "I know four people alone who have mental illnesses", reports Lina, who observes the perfectionism of our society every day - and has already felt it herself: "It's enough that you come to school without make-up, for example. People look at you and say, 'Lina, are you unwell? Are you sick?' Simply because you're without make-up! That's when you realize that everything is a bit twisted."
