The Tempo? Reduced. Slow. The melodies? All the more epic, often close to pathos. The sound? Wide cinemascope in the midday heat. To that end, Lisa Nicklisch, live keyboardist and backup singer for Madsen, sings lines like, "I don't spin in circles, I dance," on her debut album as Lisa Who. And gets away with it. "Sehnsucht," the title of the work, keeps developing an irritating lightness. One is not witnessing the birth of a German Hope Sandoval here, as one might initially think, but accompanying a young songwriter whose tracks are being recorded by a desert rock band on Valium. This indecisiveness, however, is not a flaw but a strength, giving the music a floating, vibrating uncertainty and already making others draw comparisons to Chet Baker, Billie Holiday, Pink Floyd and Air.
