Darmstadt is a city of literature: Internationally renowned literary institutes such as the German Academy for Language and Poetry, the German Literature Fund e.V. and the P.E.N. Centre of the Federal Republic of Germany are based here, and nationally important literary prizes are awarded in Darmstadt.

In 1968, the Darmstadt writer Wolfgang Weyrauch awarded the Leonce and Lena Prize to German-language authors for the first time. In 1979, the city took over the awarding and expanded the competition to include the Wolfgang-Weyrauch-Förderpreise. Selected writers, who are no older than 35, introduce themselves to the public during the Literary March and read from the works they have submitted. Immediately after each reading, the jury, consisting of Michael Braun, Ulrike Draesner, Peter Geist, Jan Koneffke, and Marion Poschmann, publicly discusses the texts read. The Literary March will be opened by Mayor Jochen Partsch, who will also present the awards on Saturday.
