With Georgia, a millennia-old cultural nation is presenting itself this year as Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair (10 to 14 October 2018). Under the motto "Georgia - Made by Characters", Georgia will not only present its literature and new publications in German, but will also provide multi-layered insights into its rich cultural landscape with an extensive programme at Frankfurt's cultural institutions. "If Georgia is a border country," wrote an astute observer in the NZZ some time ago, "then it is one whose self-understanding lies not in the demarcation of borders, but in the fluid transitions." Georgia, then, a country in between? Between East and West, between the Persians, the Ottomans and the Soviets, between Byzantium and Russia and Europe? What does that mean Europe? And what does it mean for a city like Tbilisi, where all these traces can be found? So what about "The Invention of the East" (as the new volume of stories by Georgian author Irma Tavelidze in edition.fotoTAPETA puts it)? A Georgian evening with authors Irma Tavelidze and Abo Iashagashvili (his Tbilisi novel is called "Royal Mary") and on the piano: Ekaterine Kintsurashvili.
