Through portraits of her contemporaries, the painter Lotte Laserstein made a name for herself in the vibrant Berlin of the Weimar Republic. In her paintings, the artist depicted the Berlin life that surrounded her, focusing on representations of the so-called "New Woman" and capturing her pictorial motifs with a decidedly feminine gaze. She successfully participated in numerous exhibitions and competitions and received much praise from art critics. After her early recognition, however, her career ended abruptly: due to the political conditions under National Socialism, the painter, who was baptized Christian but declared Jewish because of her grandparents, was increasingly excluded from the public cultural scene. In 1937, she managed to leave Germany and emigrate to Sweden, where, however, she was unable to continue her early successes. Cut off from the international art scene, her work was largely lost from public perception. Laserstein came into the spotlight in 2010 with the purchase by Berlin's National Gallery of one of her major works, Evening over Potsdam from 1930, which will also be on view in the Frankfurt exhibition.
