Dennis Kelly - Love and money (Love and money UA 2006)
Jess wants to take her own life. Really? A cry for help? Her husband David recognizes the opportunity to rid himself of a crushing debt.He becomes an accomplice and completes his wife's suicide. Looking back in chronologically interlaced scenes, you witness these entanglements. Jess believes in the miracle of love and the uniqueness of the universe. Just being isn't enough for her though, she wants to "have stuff" too. She becomes addicted to shopping. There is a gap between aspiration and possibility. On David's teacher's salary, it can't be done. At some point he grovels to his ex-lover Val, head of a telecommunications company. She humiliates him. He bears it. She hires him. But the money isn't enough, and neither is the love. What price are you willing to pay? And there are the parents too, reproaching and resisting in their own way the ubiquitous pageantry. Love falls by the wayside.
Dramaturg Dennis Kelly creates a grippingly dense corset of language to make this impossible balancing act palpable, with occasional flickers of subtly whimsical humor.
