On the British Isles, Lower Than Atlantis have been among the most successful acts of a thriving post-hardcore scene for several years now. Despite their resilient and often radically assaultive sound, their last few albums have climbed high on the UK charts. Having recently toured Europe on a double headline tour with the Young Guns and as support act for Enter Shikari - a package unparalleled in power and brute force - Lower Than Atlantis are coming back to Germany in September. The reason for this tour is their latest, fifth album "Safe In Sound", with which the band cracked the top 10 of the UK charts for the first time this year.
Two things distinguish Lower Than Atlantis in a special way: One is their tremendous work ethic, which has allowed the band to rack up five albums and an almost mind-boggling number of tours in seven years. And on the other, the courage to venture into new stylistic territories with each release. The latter may also be linked to numerous line-up changes - each new musician brought their own ideas and stylistic approaches.
As a result, the quartet now boasts eight former musicians, each of whom played their part in the band's development. Lower Than Atlantis were formed in 2007, during a period when a new scene of brute post-hardcore music was also forming in the UK. Accordingly, the band from the tranquil Watford met with a lot of attention almost immediately. Just over a year after their formation, their first EP "Bretton" was released at the end of 2008, followed by their debut album "Far Q" in early 2010. Despite countless tours, the two follow-ups "World Record" and "Changing Tune" were released every year.
The title "Changing Tune" proved to be a self-fulfilling prophecy stylistically as well. Because after their first albums, which were still purely driven by punk and hardcore, Lower Than Atlantis discovered an increasing passion for somewhat more trusting alternative rock on their third album. Success followed promptly: "Changing Tune" climbed into the Top 30 of the UK charts and marked their final breakthrough in England. With the current line-up of Mike Duce (vocals, guitar), Ben Samson (guitar, keyboards), Declan Hart (bass) and Eddy Thrower (drums), they recorded their fourth album "Lower Than Atlantis" in 2014. The latter now again showed clearer traits of post-hardcore, which were combined in a wonderfully natural way with highly melodic lead vocals and powerful breaks as well as tempo changes.
With "Safe in Sound" Lower Than Atlantis have now found great continuity - be it in their style between the eruption of post-hardcore and the accessibility of great melodic arcs, be it in terms of personnel consistency. For the first time in the band's history, two consecutive albums were recorded with the same line-up. Accordingly, the current work advanced to become their most successful to date, entering the Top 10 charts in both England and Scotland.
