ABBA and their music are simply immortal. This is just proven again by the sequel of the musical adaptation "Mamma Mia" in our cinemas. If you love the music, there is good news for you: the popular musical is coming to Frankfurt again - and not (only) in the cinema, but on stage!
Over 60 million people in 440 cities worldwide have already seen the musical, and the German-language production alone has attracted more than 7 million spectators to the theaters. This winter, it makes a short guest appearance in Frankfurt. Set to 22 super hits by ABBA, MAMMA MIA! tells a turbulent story that leads straight to the Aegean Sea to a daughter and her three possible fathers. From 19 December 2018 to 12 January 2019, audiences can look forward to the original German-language production translated by Michael Kunze and Ruth Deny, which can be experienced for the first time at the Alte Oper Frankfurt.
A world success as a musical, a blockbuster as a film!
In 1994, the idea was born to turn the ABBA hits into a musical. However, the idea was not to depict the story of the legendary Swedish quartet, but to create an entirely new narrative. Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson took on the task themselves and, together with Judy Craymer and Catherine Johnson, produced a humorous and rousing musical. ABBA's greatest hits, including "Dancing Queen," "Take a Chance on Me," "Super Trouper" and, of course, "Mamma Mia" were so cleverly woven together with a story to create a moving cocktail of emotions.
Three possible fathers - two unforgettable days
22 of ABBA's most popular songs tell the sunny and cheerful story of MAMMA MIA! A Hot Summer in the Aegean. On the eve of her wedding, Sophie's longing to finally meet her father leads three men back to the island they last set foot on 20 years ago. Sophie's mother Donna is confronted by her past, and Donna's best friends from those days complete the hilarious chaos.
Since its world premiere, MAMMA MIA! has delighted audiences and press alike as a sophisticated musical comedy. A whole staff of international experts contributed to the quality of the rousing production: Music and song lyrics were written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, the book by Catherine Johnson. The production was directed by the British Phyllida Lloyd. The choreography to the rousing music was developed by Anthony Van Laast. Set design is by Mark Thompson, lighting design by Howard Harrison, sound design by Andrew Bruce & Bobby Aitken, musical supervision, additional material and arrangements by Martin Koch.
