As part of the series "In the Städel Garden", Manuel Franke (*1964) is developing a monumental object that - half sculpture, half painting - will transform the Städel Museum's garden above the garden halls into an expansive installation that can be physically experienced, starting in early summer 2018. The work "Colormaster F" takes on the garden as a whole, bounded on three sides by buildings, and opposes it with a ramp made of corrugated sheet metal in bright colors. Deliberately disturbing the view of the green grassy hill from the street and placing itself in the way of the visitor lingering in the garden as a massive, insurmountable obstacle, Manuel Franke's object makes it possible to experience the Städel Garden in a completely new way. "Colormaster F" not only changes the garden in its spatial constellation, but also creates another, additional space within the garden that is both open and closed off. The lawn and the hill are thus at least temporarily enclosed on four sides. Manuel Franke studied with Tony Cragg and Irmin Kamp at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and with Daniel Buren and Pontus Hulten at the Institut des hautes études en arts plastiques in Paris. Characteristic of his expansive and space-transforming installations are the painterly surface treatment and a particular colorfulness.
