He is said to be technically one of the most accomplished pianists of the present day. But Marc-André Hamelin doesn't like that label. "I know that many people think of me that way because of some recordings from my past," he once expressed in an interview.
"But what I want least of all is to give the impression that I want to draw attention to myself on stage. The only reason for me to go on stage is to share the wonder of human creativity with others." Proving that this wonder can be found far more often than the common repertoire on concert programs often suggests, Hamelin is passionate about his work: time and again he goes in search of the overheard and forgotten works of the piano literature and regularly unearths exciting (re)discoveries. The sonatas of the Russian pianist and composer Samuil Feinberg, for example, he has not too long discovered for himself and made accessible to concert life. "It's extremely tight-knit piano playing and the kind of thing I love," Hamelin enthuses about Feinberg's compositions, which he surrounds in his recital with works by the likes of Scriabin and Prokofiev: Tone languages that unmistakably inspired the Russian.
