Blackfacing has not only recently sparked a huge debate in Germany, but is also a sadly enduring topic in Brazil. Marcio Abreu, who is considered one of the most talented and courageous theatre writers and directors there, and his Companhia Brasileira de Teatro deal with central issues of everyday racism along these discussions. Drawing on Achille Mbembe's seminal writing "Critique of Black Reason" and his remarks on the history and impact of slavery, the company illuminates the North-South divide and the aftermath of colonialism. "Preto" (Black), created during a residency at the Mousonturm, interweaves the view from Brazil with a global perspective, theater with visual art, philosophy with literature, music with anthropology.
