It's been an eventful eternity since he's been to the small bay of Canyamel in Mallorca, where he's spent formative childhood holidays since the late 60s. Suddenly, however, the well-travelled author and award-winning journalist wonders:
"What ever happened to Canyamel? " An exploration with full board takes its course, also a comedy in the old world that is at once entirely new. The Hotel Laguna is merely an endearing old family hotel. For Alexander Gorkow, however, it is one of the most beautiful hotels in the world, because in the bay of Canyamel he found his home away from home. Here the family found peace, here they found themselves and escaped the flight corridor, in whose noise corridor everyday life took place in a suburb of Düsseldorf. With his admired father, a debonair as well as eccentric nuclear family patriarch, Alexander ran day after day to the boiling hot telephone booth: the only connection to the outside world. Back in Canyamel; more than 30 years later, in a world that is no longer the old one, he now meets friends from back then - and makes new ones.
Of all things, his return to the "Island of the Germans" becomes the trip of a lifetime. Here he sees clearly: his, your dreams and losses. Gorkow's passionate, clever and very cheerful book is at once a family novel and a history of mentalities: about your holidays, your country and your longings.
