Cross-border sounds in the truest sense of the word: the world music evening at the Musikfest focuses on György Ligeti's preoccupation with African sound principles. Ligeti had linked this interest in alternatives to the Western tonal system above all to the development of his own sound language.
With Stella Rambisai Chiweshe, you will encounter one of Africa's most unusual and remarkable artists on this evening, an artist who combines popular music with the depth and power of traditional music. She celebrates a purist form of hallucinogenic trance sounds, produced on a wooden board to which flattened nails are attached as slats - the mbira, common in Zimbabwe. In the concert evening, her mbira playing meets two piano etudes by György Ligeti: musical movement patterns, combined by several voices, create melodic-rhythmic illusions which are heard but not played. It is also noticeable which suggestions Ligeti drew from African music and how related his music is to the mbira sounds.
