If you ask Michael Wollny which musicians have particularly influenced him, very soon the name Franz Schubert comes up. That's not unusual, because Wollny is a pianist, and Schubert is a historical landmark for the history of the piano, and therefore for all pianists. Even if Wollny works as a jazz pianist in a musical field that Schubert did not yet know about. Konstantin Gropper is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and, under the name Get Well Soon, a widely known institution of German pop music. And like Wollny, he is familiar with and influenced by Schubert. Songs with themes like coldness, farewell, loneliness and death, however, are not unique to Schubert. They have been written and sung everywhere and since time immemorial. There are definitely similarities between the great tradition of the art song and songs by Leonard Cohen or Madonna, for example. Michael Wollny and Konstantin Gropper reveal them in an encounter between Franz Schubert and contemporary improvised and popular music.
