On Monday, November 26, 2018, at 7:30 pm, the Museum Angewandte Kunst invites you to the third event in the Spiegelbilder series. The publicist and philosopher Michel Friedman will talk with the philosopher and political scientist Rainer Forst about tolerance. The occasion is the exhibition Lara protects me. A Georgian Narrative. Tbilisi - Tbilisi in German - is the new Berlin, they say. Long party nights and room to grow are attracting more and more people to Georgia's capital. As a centuries-old junction of central trade routes, Tbilisi brought peoples together - involuntarily, through occupations and conquests, or openly, as a refuge for outcasts elsewhere. In the process, mergers rarely occurred. Rather, cultures learned to create permeable boundaries and an eclectic coexistence emerged. This coexistence requires allowing other or foreign beliefs and ways of doing things to be valid and granted, that is, tolerance. But what exactly is hidden behind this term? What does it mean for the individual or social groups, for our community and liberal democracy? These are the questions Michel Friedman and Rainer Forst will explore in their conversation, which will last about an hour. Rainer Forst is Professor of Political Theory and Philosophy at the Institute of Political Science (Department of Social Sciences) and at the Institute of Philosophy at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. Together with Prof. Dr. Klaus Günther, he is the spokesperson of the Cluster of Excellence "The Formation of Normative Orders", received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize in 2012 as an award for his scientific work, and was elected to the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences in 2014.
