Mozart and Schumann - for Mitsuko Uchida, these two composers have long been constants in her concert programs. But they are not so similar in their purely technical demands, as the pianist finds. Schumann is sometimes "very unpleasant" to play. "He writes the works in his imagination, in a conception of perfection, as he himself would never be able to play. It's quite different with Mozart. He knew exactly that he would be able to realize his scores afterwards." For Mitsuko Uchida, Mozart is the grounded practitioner - and his music always "tied to characters. Almost every one is an opera. When I play Mozart, I'm doing opera." Last January, Mitsuko Uchida already demonstrated her view of these two composers, so uniquely clear and unobstructed by any grand gesture, in three "Focus" concerts - including one with clarinettist and composer Jörg Widmann as her chamber music partner, from whom she will now also present a new work in Frankfurt.
