1929 the world is a different place. The traumas of World War I are still fresh, after the hardships of a hard day, people try to escape their reality for a few hours in the nightlife fueled by cocaine and alcohol. The music plays live, in the ballroom, in the café, in the corner bar. The Moka Efti was one of these temples of pleasure and a prominent plot location for the series Babylon-Berlin, the television event of 2018. From blues and piano ragtime to chansons and opulent big band Charleston numbers, pieces were composed for this by Nikko Weidemann and Mario Kamien, arranged by saxophonist Sebastian Borkowski and recorded by a specially assembled 14-piece ensemble. The Moka Efti Orchestra brings the musical spirit of Berlin of the Weimar Republic back to life and takes the concert-goer on a journey through time. The concert premiere was celebrated in May 2018 at the XJAZZ Festival Berlin. In September 2018, the orchestra played an acclaimed show at the Große Freiheit in Hamburg St.Pauli as part of the Reeperbahn Festival, followed by a concert for the Day of German Unity at the Brandenburg Gate in front of several hundred thousand people.
Now the Moka Efti Orchestra is on tour - and plays at Centralstation on Monday, March 18.
