Monsieur Claude - a notary, a fiercely conservative Gaullist and an arch-Catholic - and his wife Marie lead a contented life in the French countryside complete with four rather beautiful daughters. But the idyllic peace crumbles with the weddings of the three older daughters: Adèle loses her heart to the unsuccessful Jewish businessman Abraham, Isabelle has chosen the Muslim Abderazak and Michelle is the wife of the Chinese banker Chao Ling. The pressure to conform is intense, the harsh winds of globalization blow into the French way of life, and every cozy family gathering turns into an intercultural minefield. Music to the parents' ears, then, is the youngest daughter's announcement that she is marrying - hallelujah! - French Catholic. But when they come face to face with their fourth son-in-law, the black Charles, Claude and Marie's patience runs thin. Weakened by circumcision rituals, chicken halal and kosher dim sum, their stock of tolerance is completely depleted. But Charles' family also grinds their teeth mightily over this match. Less to help with the wedding preparations than to sabotage them, the parents get involved in getting to know each other. What follows is a slaughter of national resentments and cultural prejudices. Until the family feather ruffling threatens to spoil the bride and groom's wedding.
With over 20 million viewers, including nearly 4 million in Germany, the 2014 film of the same name is one of the most successful comedies in French cinema. In times of increasing xenophobia and exclusion of religious groups, the play provides food for thought for tolerance and peaceful coexistence in a sympathetic and humorous way.
