Motorpsycho's new album "The Crucible" begins visually and musically where the last one left off, but is much more than a continuation of "The Tower": the band ventures even further into dark and experimental spaces, while remaining more focused and precise. "Musically too unwieldy for punks, too gruff for prog nerds," as the band puts it. For drummer Thomas Järmyr, this is the second record. For "The Tower", he was subjected to two months of trial by fire in 2017 to help the band record. While the last record proved the band's ability to give their listeners hell, "The Crucible" is another step forward and shows no signs of shyness. "The Crucible" was recorded in August 2018 at Monnow Valley Studios in Wales together by the band and co-producers Andrew Scheps and Deathprod. This co-production trick worked beautifully, resulting in a beautifully crafted record that, while less expansive, is at least as ambitious as its famed predecessor. The new album is denser in content, but also more ambitious in composition than "The Tower". You might think this inevitably leads to a diminished sonic attack, but the album packs exactly the punch a good rock record should.
