The rebellion is over. Prince Don Pedro returns with his soldiers as victors - Pedro's sister, the rebellious Donna Juanita, as a prisoner. The triumph is to be celebrated at Leonato's. Young Claudio and Leonato's daughter Hero become close. But Juanita disturbs the peace: before Claudio's eyes she stages a scene in which Hero appears to betray him. Meanwhile, the other party guests plot another intrigue: to bring Benedict and Beatrice, who have been warring with words for years, together.
As so often with Shakespeare, deep chasms lie beneath the light comedy: Here, it is love as a fragile social construct that quickly shatters against social conventions - or only comes about through social intervention.
