African polyrhythm meets European polyphony

TRIO IVOIRE:

HANS LÜDEMANN piano

ALY KEITA balafon, sanza

CHRISTIAN THOMÉ drums, percussion

Beyond the boundaries of genre: For two decades, the musicians of Trio Ivoire have collaborated to explore points of contact and friction between supposedly opposing musical cultures. Here the Ivorian balafon master Aly Keïta, who perpetuates the musical tradition of his African homeland on the bars. There the Hamburg jazz pianist Hans Lüdemann, who only last season presented his original "Hymns Project" at the Alte Oper Frankfurt as part of the "Jazz im Mozart Saal" series. Also on board is drummer Christian Thomé, like his fellow musicians he too is active in a wide variety of musical styles. The intersections and tensions between African polyrhythms and European polyphony will be demonstrated by Trio Ivoire on Wednesday, 30 September 2020, from 8 p.m. onwards, as part of the "Weltmusik im Mozart Saal" series at the Alte Oper.

Even 20 years after the founding of Trio Ivoire, Hans Lüdemann has not lost any of his fascination with African music. On the one hand, he feels connected to the polyphony, the overlapping voices of African music, not least through his intensive study of Bach's works. On the other hand, he observes that the current jazz scene "is still very much about the harmonic stuff, but that's all pretty much exhausted. But the rhythmic stuff, which is so interesting and so diverse in African music, that's actually the side where you can still find fresh elements. And it's also interesting that you find your way back to jazz through it. It's striking how much a certain jazz rhythm or even melody or harmony is still alive in African music."

The concert with Trio Ivoire replaces the double bill of two African-European formations originally scheduled for the evening, titled "This Side and Beyond Africa."

Tickets must be re-purchased to attend the concert with Trio Ivoire. Previously purchased tickets for the original concert must be returned to the respective box office for a refund.
