Kirchner, Heckel and Schmidt-Rottluff: In the summer of 2019, the Städel Museum will trace the interrelationships between woodcut and wood sculpture in the work of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938), Erich Heckel (1883-1970) and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884-1976) in a special exhibition. The starting point is the material wood, which is associated with the art of German Expressionism like no other. It attracted the artists precisely because of its unevenness and grain, as well as its different colors and hardness. When Kirchner, Heckel and Schmidt-Rottluff joined forces in the summer of 1905 in Dresden to form the artists' association "Brücke", the woodcut became one of their most important artistic media. It is in this printing technique that the specific expression and joy of experimentation of the three artists perhaps emerge most clearly until well into the 1920s/30s.

At about the same time as the first woodcuts and closely linked to them, carved reliefs, nudes and heads were also created, which in their treatment influenced the woodcut in terms of form and content - and vice versa. The exhibition explores the artists' particular approach to the material and the technique with around 90 woodcuts, five printing blocks and a number of sculptures. The majority of the works come from the Städel Museum's own holdings, the collection of Frankfurt patron Carl Hagemann.

Opening Hours: Tue, Wed, Sat, Sun + Holidays 10.00 - 18.00, Thu + Fri 10.00 - 21.00, closed Mondays
