Post(t)concert to the concert by Kristian Bezuidenhout
Duration approx. 20 minutes
The sequence of notes d-es-c-h opens Dmitri Shostakovich's eighth string quartet - no doubt who is meant: himself composed into the impressive work. "One could also write on its cover: 'Dedicated to the memory of the composer of this quartet,'" Shostakovich confessed to his daughter, underscoring his assessment with numerous self-quotations in the score. In print, the work that closes this music festival day in the Nach(t)konzert was published with the dedication: "In memory of the victims of fascism and war". After all, Shostakovich had composed the quartet near Dresden and under the shattering impression of the destruction of the war, which was still evident in 1960, and formulated a political confession in it.
