1189 - Waffen. Still. Stand in Jerusalem . . . again, a storm is bent on this city called "The Holy One" by Jews, Muslims and Christians alike - all sides trust in their faith and that God (their God) will stand by them - and peace is also "holy" on all three sides. And yet, for the disputants, war is also a means of defending what they consider to be the true faith, against enemies and against infidels; just another girl has been rescued from a burning house - one has had his seven sons and his wife killed - the other has had the heads of his comrades cut off, nineteen in number. And on the political side they are racking their brains as to whether one of the one faith may love and bring up the orphan girl of the other faith like a father; the losers are to leave the city, with the stipulation of a large ransom - but underhand preparations are already being made on all sides for a new round of arms - and everywhere money is being sought with which to finance the next attack on and against each other. And one invents a story with which to call attention to the fact that the faith of all three parties is worth equally as much as three rings, none of which differs in value from the other two; . . . until 1192-after three years and eight months-war again and inexorably breaks out . . . it will be the fourth major offensive to try to change the balance of power in the "Holy City," it will be followed by the fifth, then the sixth, and, and . . . . . . and today - Was a war ever "holy" ?
