Dwelling on the past is not NENA's thing. "Yesterday, it's not in me," she sings back in 1984 in her song "Question Mark" from the album of the same name.
Now, 30 years later, she calls her new album OLDSCHOOL, of all things. And catapults herself and listeners into the present with a precision landing.
"Oldschool," the title track, is also the album's opener and a clear statement right away. With a wink she now chants: "My first album has been out for 34 years, it's so old you can't even buy it in the shops anymore". In addition a fat electro beat, which you have never heard from Nena before. Straight from the 80s, right into the now.
The unusual beat was screwed together for her by a new partner in crime - none other than Samy Deluxe produced NENA's new record. NENA, the figurehead of the German new wave scene, and Samy Deluxe, the German rap prodigy. Sounds almost like it was made up.
But nobody makes up stuff like that, especially not NENA. Something like that is created by itself, oldschool. It wasn't made, it grew. You could also call it fate, and that would bring us right back to a well-known NENA theme, which also plays a role on this record.
