Norah Jones owes her towering success to artistic integrity, beguiling songs and an alluring simplicity that made her a worldwide phenomenon. Against market laws and without media hype, the New York-born performer's "new" voice and subtle stylistic devices propelled her to the top of the international charts. Since the release of her debut album, "Come Away With Me" in 2002, she has sold a sensational 47 million CDs. An elusive nine Grammys are expressions of appreciation for an unconventional artist whose subtle nuances between jazz and folk overwhelm the listener. Norah Jones will present newer songs and some of her classics on July 18 at her only concert in Germany at the Mainz Citadel. When Norah Jones wanted to realize her ambitions as a singer and pianist in the summer of 1999, she performed in numerous clubs and bars in Greenwich Village. There, she drew attention with jazz standards. Since then, jazz influences - from Bill Evans to Miles Davis to Billie Holiday and Nina Simone - have always played a formative role. Norah Jones returned to those roots with her exceptional sixth album, "Day Breaks", without abandoning her distinctive sound. She ingeniously blends the building blocks of the American song canon of jazz, rock, folk and country. The new CD features jazz greats such as Wayne Shorter on saxophone, drummer Brian Blade and Dr. Lonnie Smith. "Little Broken Hearts", the fifth album, was a collaboration with musician and producer Danger Mouse. It featured compositions by both artists exclusively. The CD "The Fall", which seamlessly followed previous successes, focused on musical experimentation and collaborations with other musicians. With the album "Not Too Late" Norah Jones presented for the first time a complete work of self-composed songs. Her second CD "Feels Like Home" was supervised by producer legend Arif Mardin. Her debut, "Come Away With Me", that bonanza of inspiration and musicianship, met with an incredible and lasting response. "Eindrucksvoll und ungewöhnlich" judged the Spiegel, "schlicht großartig" the Stern, while Norah herself called the CD a "launische, kleine Platte", with which she simply had luck, which is not granted to many. Multi-platinum for the album, chart success for the single "Don't Know Why" and an Echo Award were visible signs of the affection of German fans. Sincerity, humility and ability are the virtues Norah Jones was clearly born with. The daughter of the brilliant Indian sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar has a magical stage presence. At her gleaming grand piano, she evokes the power of music harmoniously, softly and weightlessly, pure and without superfluous show effects.
