German humour has a speciality that does not exist, for example, in the centres of stand-up comedy like London and New York: While there they are always working on new numbers and stand-ups, thus staying consistently up-to-date and keeping the creative process going continuously, in this country they write a program (or have it written) and then go on tour with it unchanged for three to four years. A method that doesn't suit Oliver Polak: "For that reason alone, my role models don't come from Germany," he says; instead, he's the one who has exported to Germany not only tactics and technique, but also tone and that subliminal tremor of the highly personal that you find in classic stand-up. Polak is the German humorist unashamed of himself or of revealing even the most unpleasant personal dramas - as is proven time and again, for example, in his columns for 'Die Welt', or in the podcast "Jewels in the Morass of Boredom", available via Audible, which he runs together with colleague Micky Beisenherz. From Jewish-influenced childhoods to contemplating the world in all its depravity to coming to terms with severe depression: Polak brings to the stage what he's been through, and has no inhibitions about making a fool of himself for a good punchline.
