The aged Goethe, on the last evening of his life, looks back on all the tears he has cried, the loves he has lost.
He remembers how, once in the spring of his life, he thought he had found love in the young Lotte, how he raced with happiness, and raged with despair, how, as Werther, he despaired of love and the world, until only death seemed to him the last resort.
The whole is framed by a panopticon of the comic minor characters, pedantic Albert, the jealous butcher's wife, all the philistines and philistines who drive Werther to despair and madness.
