The reading festival of the city of Frankfurt for the book fair with free admission

"Open Books", the great reading festival of the city of Frankfurt to the Book Fair, will take place in 2022 from Tuesday, 18, to Saturday, 22 October, as always with free admission: 100 events with about 150 authors from Germany and the world are planned. New publications from German-language and international fiction, non-fiction, comics, poetry and children's books will be presented. Readers will include Nobel Prize winner for Literature Abdulrazak Gurnah, Peace Prize winner of the German Book Trade Serhij Zhadan, Lukas Bärfuss, Karen Duve, Lutz Rathenow, Andrea Wulf, Péter Nádas, Andrej Kurkow, Tanja Maljartschuk, Feridun Zaimoglu, Susanne Schröter, Harald Meller, Kai Michel, Meron Mendel, Ulrike Herrmann, Edgar Reitz, Joshua Groß, Alain Claude Sulzer, Helene Bukowski, Zaza Burchuladze, Jan Faktor, Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi, Hanns-Josef Ortheil, Daniela Dröscher, Mohamed Amjahid, Theresia Enzensberger, John Burnside, Vera Tschechowa, Stefan Schulz, Omri Boehm, Carolin Amlinger, Oliver Nachtwey, Marlene Engelhorn, Reinhold Messner, Judith Holofernes, Nils Minkmar, Manja Präkels, Jürgen Kaube, Angela Steidele, Durs Grünbein et al.a.
Ina Hartwig, head of the Department of Culture and Science, explains: "I am glad and happy that the reading festival at the book fair, which is so popular with the public, can be held again this year completely openly and without restrictions. Free admission and spontaneous visits are as much a part of the brand essence of 'Open Books' as the concentration of readings around the Römer. The city of Frankfurt thus supports the Frankfurt Book Fair and rounds out its wide range of events at the fairgrounds and in the city.
Sonja Vandenrath, who is responsible for the municipal reading festival 'Open Books', adds: "Open Books 2022 offers a diverse program with which we specifically address a broad audience. Just like in a well-stocked bookstore, we want to arouse interest in the new releases of the fall."
In addition to a focus on this year's guest country of the Frankfurt Book Fair - Spain - a focus of the international program is on authors from Ukraine, including Oksana Sabushko, Yuri Andrukhovych and Tanya Maljartschuk. In addition, the Swiss Book Prize is represented by the nominated authors on the shortlist.
With the exception of the opening event, which will be held jointly with the Blue Sofa at the German National Library (DNB), and the poetry evening "Part of the Movement" (box office), admission is free to all readings.
"Open Books Kids" will take place during the Book Fair weekend on Saturday, October 22, Sunday, October 23, at the DNB. It reads Margit Auer, Anna Benning, Tom Gauld with Jörg Mühle, Ilona Koglin and Marek Rohde, Hans and Ole Könnecke, Ute Krause, Anke Kuhl, Volker Mehnert, Kirsten Reinhardt and Stephanie Schneider.
Literature in the Römer takes place at the book fair Wednesday, October 19, and Thursday, October 20, in the Römerhallen. Eight authors each will present their new novels: Daniela Dröscher, Theresia Enzensberger, Amelie Fried, Norbert Gstrein, Martin Kordić, Shelly Kupferberg, Andrej Kurkow, Robert Menasse, Martin Mosebach, Christoph Peters, Melanie Raabe, Sascha Reh, Bettina Scheiflinger, Norbert Scheuer, Alexandra Stahl and Julia Wolf.

Opening "Open Books" with the Blue Sofa at the German National Library on Tuesday, 18. Oct. 8 p.m.
"Open Books" around the Roman, Wednesday through Friday, 4 to 9 p.m. each day, Saturday, 4 to 9 p.m.
"Open Books Kids" at the German National Library on Saturday, Oct. 22, 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 23, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Literature at the Römer in the Römerhalle on Wednesday, October 19, and Thursday, October 20, 8 to 10 pm.
