"Opera Heroes", which was originally also called "Opera Warriors", is a masterpiece of Chinese dance drama the likes of which has never been seen on European soil. The star troupe of more than 50 dancers of the Huajin Dance Drama Ensemble of the Shanxi Academy of Arts will enchant audiences in Brussels, Geneva and Frankfurt with a highly theatrical mix of elements of Peking Opera, martial arts, acrobatics, traditional Chinese dance and modern dance in the summer of 2017, following acclaimed performances in Sydney and Vancouver. Experience a fascinating fusion of China's traditional culture and contemporary cultural trends.
"Opera Heroes combines the outstanding acrobatics and cultural traditions of China with the intensity and melodrama of Western blockbuster musicals such as Les Miserables and Cats," says Zhang Yu, chairman and president of China Arts and Entertainment Group, which sends the ensemble around the world as part of China Cultural Exchange.
Overflowing with emotion, extravagance, an elaborately constructed set and over 300 stunning costumes, this large-scale production, which tells a story of love, jealousy and murder on the eve of the cultural revolution, was put together by a highly professional team:
.Choreographer Xing Shimiao, the longtime director of the famed Chinese TV New Year event CCTV Spring Festival; writer Pik Wah Li, whose script for "Farewell My Concubine" won the Palme d'Or at Cannes; and star lighting designer Sha Xiaolan, whose credits include the lighting spectacle for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics in 2008. The music is by renowned Chinese composer Fang Ming.
