After the residents of Opernplatz had to put up with noise and construction fences in front of their businesses during the years of reconstruction of the Alte Oper, the mayor at the time, Dr. Walter Wallmann, had the first Opernplatzfest, then called the Lucae-Brunnenfest, held in 1978 as a gesture of thanks. Since then, the Opernplatzfest has become one of the most beautiful, traditional and popular of Frankfurt's "new town festivals. An average of 300,000 visitors come here year after year to enjoy international specialities and live music. At the 39th Opernplatzfest, versatility is once again on the agenda - both culinary and musical. The program for this year's Opera Square Festival includes lunchtime piano concerts, titled "Piano around the world," conducted by Professor Christoph Spendel from noon to 2 p.m.
