The musical comedy "Der Vogelhändler" by Austrian jurist, ministerial councillor and melody writer Carl Zeller is one of the half-dozen operettas that has remained in the repertoire of German-language stages to this day. And it is the only one set here with us, in the nearby Electoral Palatinate.
The stage play gets its zing from the likeable protagonist, the bird dealer Adam from Tyrol. That's why there are two singers from Tyrol: the young tenor Philipp Kapeller, who was invited as far as the operetta mecca Mörbisch because of his radiant high notes, and the well-known soprano Eva Lind, who also has many followers in Germany as a presenter.
The first part of the program is entirely dedicated to "Vogelhändler", with all the popular hits like "Ich bin die Christel von der Post", "Wie mei' Ahnerl zwanzig Jahr", "Als geblüht der Kirschenbaum" and "Schenkt man sich Rosen in Tirol". Highlights of the popular operetta repertoire can be found in the second part: music from the "Fledermaus", the "Beggar's Student", the "Csardasfürstin", the "Merry Widow" and many other works.
