The Carthusian monastery of St. Michael in Mainz and its monastery courtyard in Frankfurt
Lecture by Dr. Christoph Winterer
In the middle of the old town, the Mainz Carthusian monastery of St. Michael, founded 700 years ago, maintained a so-called monastery courtyard. This is all the more astonishing as the Carthusian order was supposed to enable its members to live in pious seclusion. The Mainz monastery was already demolished in the 18th century, but thanks to numerous preserved sculptures, altars, paintings and furnishings, we know more about its appearance. A special treasure is the extensive library of manuscripts that has been preserved. It attests to the Carthusians' concern to serve the people through "preaching by hand," the copying of books.
Dr. Christoph Winterer is a specialist in medieval manuscripts and was curator of an exhibition on Archbishop Hatto I (891 - 9139 at the Dommuseum in Mainz and on the Frankfurt publisher and patron Peter Ugelmheimer at the Dommuseum Frankfurt.
