For just a few more days, one of the major exhibition highlights of recent months can be seen at the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt. Until February 6, 2022, the focus here is on the complete works of Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876-1907). The comprehensive retrospective shows how resolutely the artist defied the social and artistic conventions of her time and anticipated central tendencies of modernism. No other German artist of Classical Modernism has achieved such legendary status in the public eye. In her short life, Paula Modersohn-Becker created a comprehensive and multifaceted oeuvre that became a projection screen for over 100 years and continues to fascinate today.

In the exhibition, the Schirn brings together 116 paintings and drawings by the artist from all creative phases, including major works that are now considered icons of art history, such as the Self-Portrait on the 6th Wedding Anniversary (1906). Presented is a current look at the work of this early representative of the avant-garde. Organized according to concise series and pictorial motifs, the exhibition focuses in particular on Modersohn-Becker's extraordinary painting style and her artistic methods, which contributed to a diverse reception of her work.
