Taking Flight Theatre (GB)
Three supporting actresses are waiting to make their entrance: They are the chorus in Euripides' ancient drama The Trojan Women. On the front stage, the drama progresses around the humiliation and abduction of the women of Troy. Backstage, the three actresses wait to be allowed to say a few sentences for brief moments so that management feels they have done something for inclusion by engaging disabled supporting actors. During their breaks they blaspheme and laugh, lie and argue. In the process, their mental shells fall like their clothes, revealing truths that easily rival the tragedy on the front stage.
Kaite O'Reilly's play is about women, their choices, and the things they hide. Wales-based Taking Flight Theatre has embedded English sign language, live audio description and English subtitles into the production's aesthetic. Peeling challenges us to experience theatre in a new way. Who is speaking? Who are we telling stories to? And who will be there to tell about them?
