Sometimes you just have to turn your back on noisy Berlin, as much as you otherwise appreciate the creativity of the capital. Raphaela Beer, who first attracted attention as Phela in the opening acts of Max Prosa, Alin Coen, Andreas Bourani and Philipp Poisel, sought peace and seclusion in the mountains of Tenerife, surrounded by laurel and pine forests and the raw spirit of the Atlantic Ocean, to record the ten new songs for her album "Wegweiser". "Volcanoes all around us, a little dog barking in the distance, otherwise just silence and nature," is how Phela raves about the two and a half months she spent on the volcanic island with her team of producers and musicians, not least enjoying the deceleration. This also helped to make the recordings particularly close and intimate. "Touching the piano keys, stroking the strings and breathing in before the first note: the new songs give her soft, warm voice and sensitive lyrics room to work," it says of "Wegweiser". Whether in reflective tracks like "Home," "Peter Pan" and the title track, or her upbeat first French track "Pour Me Porter," Phela's new album grounds with understated urgency. For the live performance of her new album, the singer/songwriter, who is also a violinist herself, has come up with something special: four string players will accompany her on her 2019 "Wegweiser" tour and join her in arrangements written especially for the tour.
