In a comprehensive survey exhibition, the Städel Museum dedicates itself to the Becher class and the paradigm shift in the medium of photography associated with it. On the basis of around 200 photographs by internationally renowned or rediscovered artists Volker Döhne, Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer, Axel Hütte, Tata Ronkholz, Thomas Ruff, Jörg Sasse, Thomas Struth and Petra Wunderlich, the exhibition explores the question of the influence Bernd and Hilla Becher exerted on their students at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. What unites or separates the students' works from their teachers? Is there such a thing as a Becher school at all, or are we 'just' dealing with a group of very successful photographers who studied in the 'right place' at a particularly favourable historical moment? And what influence did these artists have on our current concept of the image?
The exhibition "Photographs Become Images. The Becher Class' takes the work of the artist couple as a starting point to show the radical change in the way the medium of photography was dealt with, which manifested itself in the works of the Becher students from the 1980s and especially in the 1990s, and to examine its art-historical implications up to our present day. On view will be large-scale major works as well as key early works by arguably Germany's most influential generation of photographers.
