An atmospherically dense thriller that tells of arson, madness and dark dream worlds in expressive and surreal images.
In a Norwegian village, a pyromaniac sets fire to the barns. Barns and homes burn to the ground. On the day the first house burns, a boy is baptized: Gaute Heivoll, author of the novel "Before I Burn", the literary model for this theatrical adaptation. How does his own life relate to the most dramatic arsons in Norwegian history?
Norwegian director Yngvild Aspeli uses life-size and at times almost frighteningly lifelike figures and video projections to create a portrait of a village community that is increasingly coming apart at the seams.
