A powwow is a folk festival of the North American Indians and consists mainly of music and dance. However, it is also used to socialize, pay tribute, and celebrate important family events. Therefore, powwows, with their tradition of over a hundred years, are the most important aspect of Indian culture in modern times and are held both on a small scale and as world championships.
These festivals take place several times a year and run according to fixed rules. The Master of Ceremonies leads through the events. Dancers of all ages participate. Both the dance styles and the colorful outfits are very diverse.
The powwow culture has also spread outside the United States and Canada. Throughout Germany, these celebrations have been taking place for several decades. A large powwow scene has developed; interested people travel long distances to sing and dance - many friendships have been formed as a result. Even here in Germany, dancers spend a lot of effort and time on dance training and making outfits.
