The SCHIRN regularly hosts public tours that you can take part in without registering. During a 60-minute tour, art experts introduce the most important works as well as the concept of the respective exhibition. "You can only see what you know," as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe once said. And perhaps after the tour you will feel like looking at the exhibition again with different eyes and deepening your newly gained insights a little.
DIORAMA. INVENTING AN ILLUSION
It was "the brutal and enormous magic" that Charles Baudelaire admired in the dioramas. Conceived as a display stage enlivened with lighting effects in the 19th century by Louis Daguerre, the diorama became the quintessential presentation form of knowledge as a glass showcase for natural history museums. In a unique exhibition, the SCHIRN, in cooperation with the Palais de Tokyo, Paris, illuminates a cultural history of seeing. The focus is on the diorama, which realistically stages and reconstructs events, stories and living spaces using a variety of creative means.
From modernism to the present day, the diorama has been a major source of inspiration: a whole range of artists from the 20th and 21st centuries have explored this concept of seeing in their work, questioning and deconstructing the illusion of reality. The exhibition will feature stunning dioramas and works by artists such as Mark Dion, Isa Genzken, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Jeff Wall.
The exhibition has been organized by SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE FRANKFURT, in collaboration with Palais de Tokyo, Paris.

The public guided tours always begin in the foyer of the SCHIRN at the "Treffpunkt Führungen". The number of participants is limited. Registration on site, starting one hour before the tour begins.
