The Schirn regularly hosts public tours. During a 60-minute tour, art experts introduce the most important works as well as the concept of the respective exhibition. "You can only see what you know," Johann Wolfgang von Goethe already stated. And maybe you'll feel like looking at the exhibition again with different eyes after the tour and deepening your newly gained insights a little. Registration on site, from one hour before the start of the tour To the exhibition:
Democracy seems to be in crisis, the era of post-democracy already dawned. The symptoms of this are manifold: populist leaders, fake news, reversion to autocratic structures, totalitarian propaganda, neoliberalism. Nevertheless, it has been noticeable for some time that society is becoming politicized again. And artists are also increasingly raising their objections. They create works that they see as instruments of critique and that are explicitly politically motivated. In a major exhibition, the Schirn is bringing together artistic positions that can be read as seismographs of contemporary political action. The focus is on fundamental questions and the examination of phenomena and possibilities of political participation. The works question attitudes, depict forms of protest and focus on artistic engagement. Installations, photographs, videos, paintings, and sculptures by Phyllida Barlow, Andrea Bowers, Julius von Bismarck, Sam Durant, Omer Fast, Adelita Husni-Bey, Hiwa K, Ahmet Öğüt, Rirkrit Tiravanija, or Forensic Architecture document the slow dissolution of democratic achievements as well as the pressure of new mass movements. They analyze discourses of domination, offer nonconformist interjections, develop strategies of contradiction, or reproduce the imaginative ways of the new protest culture.
