An extraordinary novel, a harrowing panorama
Radka Denemarková is one of the most important Czech writers. Winner of many awards, the Germanist is also Herta Müller's translator. In her novel "A Contribution to the History of Joy" she tells at the highest level of a world not made for women, of hatred and contempt (Hoffmann & Campe). For the background story she interweaves fact and fiction as well as means of the detective story: a successful businessman is found dead in a luxury villa in Prague. A trail leads the investigator to three elderly women who have seemingly unlimited means at their disposal. They run an archive in Prague that documents thousands of cases of violence against women. At the same time, they try to save girls. - Literary critic in Maike Albath will lead through the evening.
With the kind support of the Czech literary center CzechLit. As part of the Czech Year of Culture 2019.
