The Parisian poet Rutebeuf (1230 to 1285) had a quarrel with God, but was at the same time a sharp-tongued critic of lies and deceit. Rutebeuf did not mince words even toward the greatest, and in his poem The Wrong Fox he wrote of King Louis the Saint: "The fox is dead: the fox lives / The fox is vile, full of deceit: and yet - the fox reigns!" In France, the medieval poet regained some popularity in the 20th century thanks to the chanson Poor Rutebeuf by Léo Ferré.

Heidelberg-based poet and translator Ralph Dutli now brings us Winterpech & in his bilingual edition.x>Ampersand Sommerpech (Wallstein) an important selection of his poems to the German reading public. After his volumes Fatrasien and Liebesbestiarium, Dutli completes his important and in each case beautifully designed trilogy from the unknown and modern-looking Middle Ages. Moderated by Andreas Platthaus (FAZ).
