Exactly 30 years after the beginning of the Jewish post-Soviet migration, "A Formality in Kiev" is published. Kapitelman introduces the book for the Jewish Community Cultural Department in conversation with journalist Erica Zingher. What parallels are there in both their lives, how do they experience cultural belonging, and where do they locate their writing in contemporary Jewish-German literature?
"A Formality in Kiev" is the story of a family who migrated from Ukraine to Germany as Jewish "contingent refugees" in the hope of starting a new life - and end up without any home. Told with the bittersweet humor of a son who stoically tries to become German.
