What is most amazing about him is the naturalness of his musical appearance. Already his second album "Freispiel" comes across as so casual, unselfconscious and informal that one would like to believe Reinhold Beckmann has actually been making music forever.
This is perhaps due to the fact that he is not only an expert but also a connoisseur of good music, a singer/songwriter with heart and soul and a fine sense for good storytelling. Charming, thoughtful and pleasantly self-deprecating, he tells his song stories. The beautiful failure is just as much a part of it as the view of the small quirks of everyday life.
While Reinhold Beckmann has retained his exploratory, critical view: When he takes up social and political issues in his songs, he does so precisely and forcefully - without it being necessary for him to wave the moral finger or to announce his contempt for the world with a raised middle finger. Beckmann's special strength, however, are the quiet, almost fragile songs. Ballads that tell of great feelings, pleasantly unpretentious and without ever running the risk of being kitschy.
Live, this music becomes a shared experience. Reinhold Beckmann is very close to his audience. He picks up people with his music and celebrates his songs together with them. No wonder that many can sing along with almost every line at live concerts.
Whoever has experienced Reinhold Beckmann and his musicians on stage knows what' excellent ensemble he has gathered around him. Together with Johannes Wennrich (guitar), Thomas Biller (bass), Jan-Peter Klöpfel (keyboards, trumpet) and Robin McMinn (drums) Beckmann has found an excellent as well as own sound for his songs. Virtuoso mastery of the instruments, with a sense for economy and finely placed accents. In addition, dense, springy arrangements with a transparency that makes every instrument audible. And all of this is brought across with a nonchalance, a seeming effortlessness that is a testament to absolute aplomb.
