For almost thirty years now, the struggle of England's power elites for supremacy in the country has raged and claimed many victims on all sides. Everyone involved has dirt on them, but now peace is supposed to prevail. But the power struggle continues to ferment beneath the surface, with everyone jockeying for privilege and position. One acts as a murderous political player more ruthless than his rivals: Richard, Duke of Gloucester. An unsightly freak, an outsider, he seeks his place: he wants to be king. He needs the war that has filled almost his entire life so far, and in his ego mania seems to know only one goal: ME, the three-letter world empire.

Richard III is one of Shakespeare's earliest dramas, first performed in 1593. What fascinates Jan Bosse about this archaic play is how closely it examines the merciless will to power. It provides us with the foil to question our contemporaneity in the face of an uncertain future - at a time when civilization and humanism are in danger of perishing.
